Ghana President, John Agyekum Kufuor has called for good governave at centenary of District Grand Logde. See details from as reported by Vanguard.
The
former President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, has called on members of the
District Grand Lodge of Nigeria to ensure that good governance, rule of law,
freedom of expression and association is entrenched within the Nigerian
society.
Kufuor,
who made this call while delivering a speech at the Centenary Anniversary of
the District Grand Lodge of Nigeria, held at Eko Hotel Lagos, entitled:
“Freemasonry and Governance” urged the members to dedicate all their efforts to
positively affect lives of others within and outside their immediate community.
He
stressed that Freemasonry demands from its members a respect for the law
of the country in which a man works and lives, its
principles
do not in any way conflict with its members’ duties as citizens, but should
strengthen them in fulfilling their public and private responsibilities.
According
to him, “members of the order should commit and dedicate all
their efforts to positively affect the lives of others”. “The best practice
seems to emerge to defined good governance, the rule of law, equality
before the law, freedom of expression and association to all humanity.”
The
high point of the event was the presentation of the centenary awards by the
District Grand lodge of Nigeria, Grand Master Olorogun Moses Taiga to
members who have distinguished themselves in the service of humanity.
In
his own address he emphasized that Masonry has no other mission than to exalt
and ennoble humanity, to bring light out of darkness, beauty out of ugliness
and make every life more radiant, in pursuit of this principles, the District
Grand Lodge of Nigeria and its several Lodges would continue to practice this
important Masonic injunction. “We may never be able to count all that we have
done. They are truly numerous and it is uncharitable to count all that we have
done for others. Suffice it however, to say that at the District Grand Lodge
level, we have done a lot. Above all, as an individual, a Mason’s daily life is
never complete until that Masonic hand of friendship is extended to relieve the
one in want whether a member or not. As thousands of us live this life daily in
Nigeria, we would continue to pour little drops of warmth on a society that
needs friendship and love”.
The
District Grand Master, Olorogun Taiga disclosed, as he welcomes the delegates
that Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest, non-religious, non-political,
fraternal and charitable organizations. It is a benevolent, social and
charitable universal organization whose members focus on lessons that help them
achieve moral and spiritual enlightenment. We are religious and patriotic, but
our Lodges are non-sectarian and non-political, we search for truth, we support
justice, show tolerance and act charitably. Thus, the three cardinal principles
of Brotherly love, Relief and truth, and the three prime virtues of Faith, Hope
and Charity are highly treasured in the heart of a Mason. It is therefore our
sincere desire to leave this world better than we met it. This is our life as
Freemasons – true and trusty.
The
series of activities which started with the call to order of
brethren by the District Grand Director, W. Bro Busola Holloway attracted
prominent personalities from all walks of life to mark this epoch
celebration, they include: HRM Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha,
representative of the HRM Oba Akenzua, Oba of Benin, among others.
A
presentation of N7 million was made to the Sickle Cell Foundation to
buttress Freemasonry commitment to charity. “ This is important because
we regard charity as one of those great virtues which give as much joy to the
giver as it does to the receiver. We are encouraged not only to be happy but to
spread happiness” The District Grand Director of Ceremonies said. Receiving the
donation on behalf of the foundation for the purchase of 150kv generator were
Prof. Akinyaju and Akindele, who appreciated the kind gesture of members of
District Grand Lodge in Nigeria. Wives of departed members of the district
grand lodge were not left out of the celebrations as they received donations
for upkeep.
