Update on the aircraft crash that was carrying the
remains of the former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu from Lagos to
Akure in the southwest for the final burial ceremony arranged for the former
minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo this weekend.
The plane with 20 people on board crash-landed shortly
after takeoff and burst into flames in a place near an airport fuel depot.
According to the news made available to AFP, the plane
with 20 people on board suffered engine failure shortly after takeoff from Murtala
Mohammed International airport, Lagos on Thursday morning, crash-landing near
an airport fuel depot and killing at least 13 people.
Joel Obi the spokesman for Nigeria’s Aviation ministry
said, “Thirteen people (on board) have been confirmed dead, six injured, while one
person is still unaccounted for.”
Supo Atobatele, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Airspace
management agency said, “it was going to Akure (in the southwest). The engine
failed on takeoff and it crash-landed and burst into flames”
However, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has recovered
the two black boxes for the Airlines plane which crashed in Lagos this morning
(Thursday). These black boxes will give insight into what really happened,
Director of engineering, AIB, Mr. Emmanuel Dialla said.
The Names of the Lagos
State Plane Crashed Victims and Survivors.
The names of people involved in the victims are yet to be
revealed, however, rumour has it that the only son of the late Olusegun Agagu
and the first Son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Gbenga were among the
survivors.
However a Commissioner in AIB, Shehu Usman refused to reveal
the names of the crash victims, when asked. He said, we cannot release the
names of the causalities or the hospitals where they are until we have
contacted the families involved”.
“The plane was a Brazilian made Embraer aircraft. The issue
of the age of the aircraft has not come up yet. They concluded the search and
rescue operations at about 11:50am.” He concluded.
Meanwhile the Ondo State Government in a released issue
by Mr. Eni Akinsola, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Olusegun Mimiko said, “Information
available indicates that there were causalities and a few survivors of this
unfortunate crash. We are, however, still expecting more information”.
While talking on the people involved in the aircraft
crashed, he said, Commissioner, Family Members, Associates and top Government Officials
were involved in the crash.
“We ask all residents to be in a sober and prayerful mood
at these trying times, as God is indeed the only person we should call upon in this
period.” He concluded.
